Afternoon Thoughts On the Kids

Well, the boys are home from their first day back at school, and we've finished homework. M. and I are still working through his reading book (I miscounted a bit and we got a little sidetracked when I thought he'd be done by Christmas, but we are about halfway now.) He is doing so well - in fact some words he's outright reading now and doesn't even have to sound out, but we're sticking to the lesson plans in the book to make sure his phonics are strong once we finish. And J. is now doing 3rd grade math officially. His teacher spent the first half of the year working on his strategies and on time and now he's moved on into the real 3rd grade stuff.

R. is scooting and rolling happily around the living room and singing to herself. She is definitely mobile now. If I just turn my back she's all the way over to the door or the window. But the pest control guy came today, so I'm keeping her away from the window area where he sprayed. R. has the weirdest habit, too, of scooting backwards on her back. She arches her back and looks back and pushes off with her feet. It looks strange, and it's got to be painful, because she's wearing a little scratched place on the back of her head. She's a little baldilocks anyway, and I'm worried she'll rub all the little bit of hair off that she does have in that spot. I've been trying to think what I could do to protect her head back there because she's really worn it a bit raw. She's really working on getting up on her knees, so hopefully pretty soon she'll figure out that it's faster and more efficient to move forward! That's a pretty good metaphor for life, isn't it? We do better when we're moving forward rather than always looking back and living in the past. Anyhoo......

Must finish this and call the boys inside to get ready to go to church tonight.
